On my second night at Tamboti, our camp for the safari, we heard the roar of some lions in the near vicinity of the camp while having dinner round the camp fire.

After the meal and a chat we retired to bed for an early morning start. The roars continued and then silence ……

Up bright and early after downing a quick cup of hot coffee, we were on our way. I was in a state of heightened anticipation not knowing what the day would bring. But I was not going to be disappointed. 3kms down the road we came across a group of cars that had stopped. We wondered what they were looking at. Much to my excitement there was a pride of lions that had made a Buffalo kill during the night. We realized it was very probably the lion we heard during the night near camp. The following images are of the lions and their kill.

I prefer the drumstick, especially first thing in the morning.

She suddenly became’ aware of the cars’ that had parked up and gave us the stare, especially the bloke  in the back seat of a particular car with a telephoto lens – me.

This young female was very engrossed on the job at hand – a reward for ‘a hard day’s night’.

This is what one calls sharing, however reluctantly, even though she did most of the hard work.

The lion, his Highness, has gone. I think he got the message. Now to get down to business. Where was I? AH, the rump, that’s right.

The herd of Buffalo that was now missing a member was still grazing not far from where the lions were feeding. However the big old bulls from the herd were advancing towards the kill in very threatening gestures. I do not know what they hoped to achieve, but it made the lions very uneasy. Buffalos are quite capable of killing lions.

Just stay away I have not finished yet.

Don’t even think about it.
